The case
Short, without being rushed
A property no other country in our collection has, and it is entirely a function of geography.
Why it works
| Rwanda | A Kenyan or Tanzanian six-night trip | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting to the wildlife | Two hours by road from an international airport | An internal flight, plus transfers at both ends |
| Days lost to transit | Effectively none | One, sometimes two |
| Luggage limits | None — you are in a vehicle | 15kg soft bags for light aircraft |
| Places you must visit | One, and it is extraordinary | Two or three, to justify the flights |
| What six nights feels like | Complete | Compressed |
The shape we build most often
Six nights
Kigali, Volcanoes, Kivu
-
Night 1
Kigali
Arrive, sleep properly, and see something of a city that surprises almost everybody who spends a day in it.
The point of this night is not sightseeing. It is that you should not trek the morning after a long-haul flight, and this is the cheapest possible way to avoid it.
-
Nights 2–4
Volcanoes
Two hours by road. Three nights rather than two, with the trek on the middle day — which means a soft day to arrive and acclimatise, and a soft day afterwards to be tired in.
The non-trekking days are not filler. Golden monkey tracking, the Dian Fossey memorial hike, the Musanze caves, and lodges good enough that doing nothing at them is a legitimate plan.
-
Nights 5–6
Lake Kivu
An hour or so by road to a large, warm, bilharzia-free freshwater lake with essentially nothing to do.
After the trek that is exactly right. This is the honeymoon half of a Rwandan honeymoon, and couples who skip it in favour of a third night at Volcanoes usually say afterwards that they would not again.
If you have more nights
| Nights | What to add |
|---|---|
| 8 | Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walkway — a genuine contrast to the volcanoes |
| 10 | A Kenyan conservancy: forest then plains, and nothing repeats |
| 12–14 | The same, plus a coast — Zanzibar or the Kenyan shore |
What we would not do
- Two treks on consecutive days. It is the same hour twice, and the second costs another permit.
- Rwanda and Uganda in ten nights unless two treks is genuinely the plan. It is the same forest and the same animal.
- Skipping Kivu to add a Volcanoes night. The doing-nothing part is what makes it a honeymoon.
- Trekking the morning after landing. The commonest scheduling error here, and entirely avoidable.
